The impact on traffic safety of different winter maintenance measures was investigated. The aim was to study the traffic accident risk or accident rate immediately before and after different measures such as snow clearing, sanding and chemical deicing. As expected, the results show that the traffic accident risk is considerably increased 1-3 hours before a measure. Then it decreases rapidly, presumably as an effect of the measure. There are tendencies different from the basic pattern, which emerge when different types of measures and different weather conditions are studied separately. The investigation does not furnish sufficient information to state the impact on traffic safety of different winter maintenance strategies.
