A medium-draft port is being developed at Nome on the Norton Sound coast of western Alaska. The port will consist of an offshore terminal and docks linked to the shore by a 3600-foot-long rubble mound causeway. Ice-engineering studies for the port are described. Physical modelling was extensively used to gain insights into the interaction of ice sheets with both the sideslopes and the nearshore breach in the causeway. The modelling showed that ice rubble can over-ride parts of the port. However, the boulders armoring the sideslopes were found to remain stably seated during the ride-up on the sideslopes by ice rubble. A practicable strategy is derived to provide protection against ice over-ride of vital portions of the port. The ice-protection strategy involves the judicious location of tubular ice-breaker frames offshore of the port. These frames could be back-fitted to the port should its year-round use be required.
