The Mariner Jupiter/Saturn (MJS) project is an outgrowth of a program known as the Outer Planets Grand Tour. Using a technique perfected by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a flyby of the planet Jupiter will accelerate a spacecraft and enable it to reach all of the outer planets, which would not be possible with normal launch vehicle capabilities.
