In this report, a number of environmental issues in the transport sector are scrutinized. The calculations will be used in a broader study on behalf of the Swedish Department of Transportation aiming at identification and evaluation of the effects of potential measures to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions from the transport sector. Earlier studies are examined and the environmental effects are recalculated with new emission data. Studies used are e.g. the traffic studies that were initiated in connection with negotiations concerning infrastructure measures in the Stockholm region and the comprehensive assessment of the effects by implementation of Road Transport Informatics (RTI) in the Gothenburg region. The study shows that the knowledge of the environmental effects of different traffic have to be improved. The potential to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions is estimated to about 2 million tons yearly, which correspond to about 10% of the total Swedish emissions. 23 refs, 38 tabs
