Satisfactory tire friction is an indispensable condition for safe road traffic and safe aircraft ground operation. This report begins with some simple, fundamental friction theories. Differences between aircraft tires and car tires are discussed. Special attention is paid to the hydroplaning phenomena. Then different methods to measure runway and road friction are discussed and critically examined. The different methods are examplified by descriptions of some realized test devices. The possibility to standardize a friction test method for runways and roads is discussed and the need for a standard test tire is emphasized in the conclusion.
