Rutted roads constitute a prominent problem in Scandinavia. Since questions of road management have generally had high priority in traffic research throughout the world, an extensive knowledge base should exist relating to uneven and rutted roads. This literature study has been made with the aim of acquiring such knowledge. The study shows that ruts may exert a negative influence on traffic safety when filled with water or when roads are affected by winter conditions. Under these circumstances, the driver may lose control of the vehicle. On the other hand, ruts do not appear to influence traffic safety in good road conditions.
