The report deals with the measurement of ramjet and rocket thrust in flight. Certain simplifying assumptions are made, the principal ones being: (a) that the flow is unidimensional; (b) that the specific heats of the gas are the same before and after combustion; (c) that the flow is adiabatic before combustion; and (d) that in the sections of the air inlet where there are no shock waves the flow is isentropic. The three main methods of measuring thrust that are discussed are the strain-gauge method, the thermodynamic method and the aerodynamic method. The effect of the fuel/air ratio and of altitude and Mach number are also discussed. A number of charts are included giving some results obtained in actual flight. (Author)
