There is a need to minimize costs and maximize efficiency in aircraft operations. Optimal flight trajectory generation can reduce operating costs, increase passenger and aircrew comfort and, in the case of military operations, reduce the loss of aircrew and aircraft. This memorandum presents a review of the field of optimal flight path generation for both civil and military operations and gives some recommendations for future research. Keywords: Civil aviation; Flight path optimization; Military aircraft; Civil aircraft; Australia. (edc)
