A major factor in road safety at night is the shape of the dipped beam. The Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) has a number of regulations specifying the dipped beam pattern. In investigations carried out by the NITRR it was found that headlights bearing the 'E' mark had an unacceptable high failure rate when tested to the ECE specification. When normal production 'E' marked lamps are fitted to 'E' marked headlights a further deterioration is expected. Tests carried out at the NITRR with these 'E' marked lamps showed only a minor deterioration of the dipped beam. These tests also give an indication of the dipped beam pattern as used by normal vehicles travelling on the road at night in South Africa.
