Shortly before the four bus companies serving the Greater Washington, D.C. Area were acquired by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, a survey of passenger travel habits was conducted on the buses of each company. An on-bus origin-destination mail-back questionnaire was handed to all passengers boarding one-third of the scheduled bus runs on an average week-day in the fall of 1972. Over one-third of the questionnaires were completed and returned to the survey organization for analysis. The report describes the questionnaire, the procedures used in selecting the buses on which interview forms were distributed, staffing and training the survey crews, and methods used to expand the sample of data to represent average daily travel.
