In 1979, ten years after its groundbreaking, Metrorail expands another 1.87 miles and four stations to the Ballston Station on the Orange Line, bringing total operations to 33.6 miles and 38 stations. Ridership is up 23.2 percent over 1978. Sunday service begins in September. Congress passes a $1.7 billion Metro funding bill to complete the 101-mile system. Richard Page becomes WMATA's third general manager. Metro wins 'Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement of 1979' award from American Society of Civil Engineers. Metrobus acquires 43 55-foot-long articulated buses. Metrobus inaugurates a new service for persons with mobility impairments, using 100 lift-equipped, kneeling buses on 36 major routes.
