The planned project will extend the existing navigation channel at Fort Myers Beach, Fort Myers, Lee County, Florida about 2,000 feet easterly. This extension will facilitate shrimp boat and barge traffic movement to and from terminal facilities located beyond the existing channel limits. Dredging of 40,000 cubic yards of material used as beach nourishment on Estero Island, increased channel and turning basin will decrease chances of vessel damage by collision or grounding. The adverse environmental effects were determined to be the loss of 7 acres of bottom biota and temporary turbidity during construction. (Author)
