Electronically Controlled Braking Systems (ECBS) offer many potential benefits to the trucking industry in the areas of safety, reliability, enhanced driver feedback, and maintainability. ECBS are being tested by a number of manufacturers. These systems are intended to replace the current pneumatic brake application signal with an electronic actuation signal. This report represents a preliminary review of ECBS technology. The stakeholders considered in this report are the users (operating truck fleets), the truck manufacturers, the brake manufacturers, and the federal government.
