New methods are presented for solving linear, physically and geometrically nonlinear problems of the theory of shells encountered in ship designs. These methods permit one to consider many of the previously unsolved problems in structural mechanics of importance in the practice, and also make possible an appreciable refinement of a number of extant solutions. Examples are given for the design of complex shells. Trends and directions for further research are noted. (Author)
