A mathematical model for estimation of ship maneuvering performance was introduced to cope with the increasing demands for design stage evaluation of safety in ship operation while in harbor. The present mathematical model enables continuous simulation of ship maneuver from an ahead motion, through the range between null-ahead-speed, to astern motion. Good agreements of simulations and model tests results were obtained in ordinary maneuvering motion, stopping motion, short turning and lateral shifting. The mathematical model is expected to be applicable to various problems not only in relatively high speed motion with a small drift angle but also in low speed motions with large drift angle, in turning with null-ahead-speed and in backing motion.
