This report documents an Operational Test and Evaluation (OTE) effort conducted to assess the feasibility of replacing select traditional small boat station shore-side facilities with live-aboard vessels. The success of such a concept is dependent on the crews' ability to adapt and cope with around-the-clock operations from a restricted work and living environment. Survey and log forms were used to collect continuous data on human factors variables, at both a traditional small boat station and an experimental live-aboard concept station, to assess the impact of the live-aboard concept on crew safety and well-being. Results of this evaluation indicate that all human factors variables were well within acceptable limits. The evaluation did not reveal any significant adverse effects on crew members which would prevent the use of the live-aboard concept in Coast Guard small boat stations which are similar to the one in the study. However, it was emphasized that although the results are positive, they may not reflect the reactions of crews in other Coast Guard small boat station environments.
