The report identifies the characteristics of outdoor recreational trips and the factors influencing their distribution. On the basis of data from a number of Washington state agencies, trip purpose criteria have been established and seven trip purposes have been identified. These trip purposes were combined into trips to point attractions and trips to linear attractions. The spatial distribution of camper trips to state parks in Washington state and Southern California has been simulated for two points in time using a gravity model. The difficulties in projecting trips produced and trips attracted are shown.
