Analysis of the Atlas series D program demonstrated the need for developing a method for determining a table of burnable lox that was consistent with varying payload weights and sustainer cutoff accelerations. Previous to the space booster program, the existing burnable lox table was satisfactory. The Atlas/Agena flight data indicated, however, that an alternate method should be devised to meet the demands of heavy payloads and low sustainer cutoff acceleration. Data from Atlas/Agena flights in which propellant depletion occurred also indicated a 'burnable' residual at sustainer engine shutdown. In the analysis of five Atlas/Agena flights which evidenced lox depletion and a 'burnable' lox residual, an index for determining true burnable residual was developed. This index is effective static head to the sustainer lox pump. Effective static head is related to but not equal to NPSH. It is employed primarily because it is directly obtainable from available flight data. (Author)
