The Columbus Free Flyer has a three year mission in low Earth orbit with the primary objective to provide microgravity laboratory capabilities. The particular mechanical requirements resulting from this mission are explained, relevant design features are presented, and the verification approach envisaged in the development program leading to a launch of the laboratory in 2001 is outlined.
