The Columbus Free Flyer has a 30 year mission in low Earth orbit with the primary objective to provide microgravity laboratory capabilities. The particular mechanical requirements resulting from the mission are explained. The relevant design features are presented and the verification approach envisaged in the development program which shall lead to a launch of the laboratory in 2001 is outlined.
