Philosophies for Spacelab payload modeling and testing are given. Although the wide range of characteristics of possible Spacelab payloads hinders the establishment of all-embracing modeling and testing specifications, ESA felt the necessity to: acquaint the Spacelab user community with the subject, emphasizing the new aspects introduced by the advent of Spacelab; provide them, to the largest extent possible, dealing with such a complex topic, with the most comprehensive guidelines on the subject. The main purpose therefore is to assist the potential Spacelab users in the definition of a development and manufacturing program for their experiment equipment, by introducing the subject, clarifying the terminology, giving a description of the possible development path of experiment equipment for Spacelab and providing general guidelines.
