The first International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-1) mission will be launched no earlier than January 22, 1992, at 8:54 a.m. EST on board STS-42 Orbiter Discovery. IML-1 is the first in a series of long module Spacelab.missions dedicated to fundamental microgravity research conducted in materials and life sciences. Discovery s crew, formed by members from the United States, Canada, and Germany, will conduct science and technology investigations that require the low-gravity environment of space with emphasis on experiments that study the effects of microgravity on living organisms and materials processes. As its name implies, IML-1 is an international Spacelab mission. Through five international space agencies, more than 220 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, are collaborating with NASA to provide a variety of complementary facilities and experiments. The five international agencies are: the European Space Agency (ESA), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the German Space Agency (DARA), the French National Center for Space Studies (CNES) , and the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA). The enclosed Mission Operation Report (a) describes the objectives of the IML-1 mission, (b) provides a brief description of the science investigations and the IML-1 configuration, and (c) outlines the ground operations elements for mission support.
