In a joint effort by the Federal Aviation Administration and Delta Air Lines, the detailed inspection, destructive evaluation, and extended fatigue testing of a fuselage structure from a retired revenue-service passenger aircraft was undertaken. Eleven large sections of fuselage representative of structure susceptible to widespread fatigue damage were removed from a retired Boeing 727-232 aircraft near its design service goal of 60,000 flight cycles. This volume (Volume 5 of a 5-volume report) documents the findings associated with the analysis of data from this effort. The scope of this work was to analyze the crack data (patterns, distributions, sizes, and shapes) obtained during the teardown evaluation of this aircraft. Emphasis was placed on using this crack data to characterize multiple-site damage (MSD) initiation, detection, crack linkup, residual strength, and the widespread fatigue damage average behavior in the structures removed. Analysis methods were developed to correlate the state of MSD at any point in time.
