In a joint effort by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Delta Air Lines, the detailed inspection, destructive evaluation, and extended fatigue testing of fuselage structure from a retired revenue-service passenger airplane was undertaken. Eleven large sections of fuselage representative of structure susceptible to widespread fatigue damage were removed from a retired Boeing 727-232 airplane near its design service goal of 60,000 flight cycles. This volume (volume 3 of a five-volume report) documents the findings associated with the inspections made to the retired passenger service airplane. The scope of this work is to assess the capabilities of the selected Nondestructive Testing (NDT) to find and characterize damage. The assessment documents the NDT detectability of small cracks by comparing the crack information obtained during damage characterization to the results of the baseline NDT conducted. Additionally, the results of several emerging NDT techniques are presented, along with correlation with the measured cracks. Results from field and preteardown inspections, including the basic crack data, are presented. This includes the hole location, crack location, and crack orientation. Specifically, the analytical work includes: (1) Compilation of the NDT inspection results from the field inspections, the preteardown inspections, and the emerging inspections have been complied and input into the database. (2) Documentation of the crack sizes present in the panel during the NDT, either from direct measurement or from back-tracking of final findings.
