The Tyne and Wear Metro forms the 'spine' of a fully integrated transport system. The Metro is a light rapid transit railway, using much of the old North Tyne Loop of the British Rail suburban system on Tyneside. The first stages of Metro were opened in August 1980, to replace the aging diesel multiple units (dmu) trains. No sooner had the Metro-cars begun to operate than local residents were complaining of serious noise problems. This had not been anticipated because the noise problems. This had not been anticipated because the noise levels from the Metro were expected to be similar to the previous dmu trains. As part of a program of remedial work, aimed in part at these noise problems, the PTE decided to install continuous welded rail (CWR). It was hoped there would be acoustical benefits the original jointed track was considered one of the main sources of noise generation. The aim of the research was to monitor the subjective and objective effects of a change in track on a 'before and after' basis. The report presents the results of a social survey and noise survey prior to a track change on the in-bound line between Benton and South Gosforth.
