The report reviews the present situation regarding use of vehicle-actuated traffic signals in South Africa. Vehicle actuation is described, and includes a discussion of inductive loops and their installation. The work undertaken by the National Institute for Transport and Road Research in the field of vehicle actuation between 1977 and 1986 is examined, and that discussion includes the definition of isolated intersection, the influence of other upstream traffic control, and the financial and operating benefits of vehicle actuation as a method of control.
