In vehicle actuated system green signal periods vary automatically from one cycle to next according to current volume of traffic passing through intersection; particular feature of Ericsson system is use of electric cable detectors installed under road surface, unexposed to wear from passing vehicles; life of detectors -- which are normally most heavily taxed components in road signal plant -- is practically unlimited.
