A test series with 6 different passenger cars has been carried out in order to find a suitable test procedure for the simulation of collisions between cars and big animals, in this case a moose. Another object of the test series was to highlight the typical injury producing mechanisms in this type of collisions. A 'moose-dummy' made of rubber cables and with a mass of 390 kg was used. The windscreens of the cars hit the dummy with speeds from 65 to 78 kmph. During the collisions the speed of the cars was reduced by 13 to 26 kmph and the deceleration level was approx. 5 to 10 g. Anthropometric dummies were used in four tests. These dummies were belted and the accelerations in the dummies were measured. These accelerations were relatively small except when there was a contact between the head of the dummy and the deformed roof of the car. Another injury-producing factor observed was the large amount of glass from the windscreen thrown into the cars. The test procedure used proved to give a reasonable simulation of real accidents of this type and could, after some modifications, be used for further research and development in this field.
