The aim was to test a method for studying the use of legal drugs in traffic. Interviews with car drivers were conducted at gas stations and parking areas outside department stores. The number of drivers who refused to cooperate was 4%. 14% reported that they were drug users; variations across times and places were considerable. The differences obtained between locations and times probably reflect true differences between driver groups. 6% reported that they were using preparations that are regarded as potentially hazardous in traffic. 13% of those interviewed stated that they would not have consented to give saliva samples or urine samples had they been asked to do this. Questions were also asked regarding the use of alcohol.
