The purpose of this literature review was to describe (1) the factors leading to typical preschool pedestrian accidents, (2) the developmental characteristics of the preschool child that affect his/her behavior in traffic, (3) social factors that may place a preschooler at risk in traffic, (4) programs of traffic safety education for in-school and preschool use in the United States, and (5) preschool traffic safety programs developed by foreign countries. Detailed information relevant to each of these objectives is presented.
