Although flight flutter testing is by no means fully developed and much still requires to be done both on the improvement of old techniques and the search for new ones, it has nevertheless become accepted as an integral part of the overall flight test programme of modern prototype aircraft. This is encouraging and it is perhaps of some interest to observe that during the last two decades there has been a steady and significant decline in the incidence of catastrophic flutter during the testing of prototype aircraft; this is undoubtedly due in a large measure to the increased use of flight flutter testing.
