Flight flutter testing is explained in regard to the airworthiness requirements, the subcritical clearance philosophy, the excitation device used, the excitation signal types, the instrumentation/recording, the signal processing, and the system identification methods used for analyzing the flight data. Some practical problems and future needs are considered. A bibliography is included but it is not exhaustive, either historically or internationally; some modal identification references are added since there are many parallels between flight and ground vibration testing.
