The number of meetings between motor vehicles driving in opposite directions was examined on 113 residential streets during 208 days in 33 Finnish municipalities. A model to estimate the time intervals between meetings of a certain type was built based on the results. In addition, models were formulated based both on the empirical data and theoretical calculations to estimate the intervals between such meetings of vehicles of different type that cause hindrance in vehicular traffic on a traveled way of a certain width.
