The joint Soviet-American space flight operation in July 1975, in which the Soviet Spacecraft Soyuz-19 and the American Apollo rendezvoused in orbit, docked, and carried out various experiments and observations, was three years in preparation, requiring extensive and close interaction by both sides. Among other accomplishments the experiment successfully proved the feasibility of docking two space vehicles of different design while in space, for emergency, scientific, or practical purposes. The event was hailed for its revolutionary scientific, economic, and political significance. (Author)
