Studies were carried out on the technical characteristics of the apogee boost motors (ABM), one using solid propellant and the other using liquid propellant, for the proposed Ariane launcher. Points examined are: nominal performance, dispersion in the velocity increment, operation, reliability, industrial problems, growth potential, and development plan. A qualitative comparison between the two ABM's is proposed for each of these points.
