The objective of the effort was to determine the potential of developing techniques and methods for reducing the occurrence of highway accidents attributable to degraded driver alertness. Lapses in driver alertness are thought to be a major factor in the causation of serious motor vehicle accidents. The most recent NASS data was analyzed to determine the extent of the problem. The study focused on the potential of devices to detect driver alertness problems and concluded with recommendations for the development and performance of a demonstration program to further evaluate these techniques and methods.
