State accident records from Connecticut, Virginia and Texas were analyzed for differences in the accident experience among vehicles of different model years, and for differences in the frequency of accidents and injuries in accident situations affected by specific motor vehicle safety standards. The literature on the effects of motor vehicle safety standards was reviewed and quantitative information synthesized into estimates of the effectiveness of certain groups of standards. The information was then combined into effectiveness estimates of both pre-crash and crash phase safety standards. The injury reducing effects of these standards for single vehicle crashes was projected to 1985.
