The idea for a mini-workshop to explore the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) evolved from an awareness of the increasing capabilities and efforts within several Federal organizations to use UASs for a wide variety of missions. UASs have the potential to revolutionize Federal environmental observing strategies in the near future in a manner not seen since the introduction of weather satellites and Doppler weather radars assets decades earlier. There is a clear need to ensure our efforts are coordinated and transparent to the administration and the public.
