This report discusses the technology required to develop unmanned free-swimming submersibles to be used for inspecting undersea pipelines and structures. Of particular concern is the use of solid-state electronics and microprocessor technology. The philosophies concerning performance criteria, design flexibility, man/machine interface, and cost are discussed, and the vehicle's performance in these areas is evaluated. (Author)
