Projects S-1300(14) and (15) have been programmed by the New Mexico State Highway Department to improve an inadequate portion of State Road 32 from a point approximately 13.5 miles south of Gallup north to Gallup. A two-lane highway is proposed, consisting of two 12--foot wide driving lanes and two 8-foot wide shoulders. Normal highway construction particularly the disturbing of plant cover and earth areas will cause some dust conditions during the period of construction. As only a minor amount of additional right of way is anticipated the direct effect on adjacent land will also be very minor. The improved vertical alignment and wider roadway section will allow vehicles to maintain a more constant speed. This should reduce somewhat vehicle noise, particularly from large trucks. No recreation facilities are adjacent to the projects. The improved transportation provided by the new road will enhance use of recreation facilities to the south. The proposed improvement will provide safer and more efficient transportation. There are no live water courses adjacent to or crossing the projects. Construction of the projects will have no direct effect on water in the immediate area. Information from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish indicates the surrounding area has a very low wildlife potential.
