The modernization of the Turin (Italy) tramway, through the adoption of high performance electronically regulated electric engines, required an accurate check of the existing tramway electrical supply system. To accomplish this task, a computer-aided design analysis method was employed in which the network was represented by its various elements, i.e., ac to dc conversion substations, power supply cables, contact and engine wires, etc., distributed in such a way as to suit a set of hypothetical traffic conditions. The network analysis code provided the node voltages and opposite end currents, thus allowing a rapid check of the system. The next step involved the modification of the network structure and parameters to satisfy the constraints imposed by the elements constituting the network itself and the transport service requirements.
