Results are provided of a Japan-wide survey of 190 industrial plants which use robots in the production process. The primary purpose is to give, for the first time, a true picture of the incidence and nature of injurious accidents involving robots. A considerable amount of other information was also collected during the survey. This includes the type and scale of industries using robots; first year in which robots were introduced in each plant; reasons for the introduction of robots and the effects of the introduction; number of installations according to type of robot; applications of robots; new introductions expected within the next 5 years; kinds of safety measures instituted with regard to industrial robots; and training of operators. Summaries are given of 11 injurious (2 fatal) accidents and 13 very close approaches.
