The report compares accidents involving handicapped drivers with accidents involving non-handicapped drivers. Two groups of drivers have been selected for comparison in this study. The Study group is composed of handicapped drivers who require 'Full Hand Controls' because of a disability of both feet, legs, or parts of legs missing or unable to function, and the Control group, composed of randomly selected non-handicapped drivers from the New York State Master Driver License File. The analysis is primarily statistical in nature and the findings are examined for statistical significance. These findings are intended to help to identify and highlight areas which may warrant action on the part of motor vehicle administrators. The data indicate that the handicapped driver group has a higher accident rate than other drivers. Also, it was demonstrated that the accidents involving the Study group differed significantly from those involving other drivers in respect to other accident variables such as weather condition, accident type, and manner and location of collision.
