The State of Florida, Department of Transportation, has constructed a skid trailer for use in routine skid testing and pavement skid resistance research. The purpose of this project was to design, construct, and evaluate a skid trailer conforming to the ASTM Tentative Method of Test for Skid Resistance of Pavements Using a Two-Wheel Trailer (ASTM Designation: E 274-65T). The Florida Skid Trailer includes a pavement wetting system to apply a constant depth water layer at all speeds from 20 MPH to 70 MPH and can test pavements with either or both wheels. Electronic timing circuitry controls all test cycles, and preselected time sequences are available. A three-channel electronic recorder provides a separate trace for each wheel force measurement and records an analog signal proportional to vehicle speed. Zero suppression circuitry is used on all three channels to improve trace resolution. (BPR abstract)
