The project provides for the improvement of U.S. Highway 460 (Illinois) Route 15) an East-West service highway in the city of Mt. Vernon, from 24th to 13th Streets. The project involves the widening of U.S. Highway 460 from 36 feet to approximately 56 feet with two lanes of traffic in each direction and the construction of a pedestrian overpass. The total additional land area for this project is from 1.4 to 2.3 acres. The project will eliminate a two lane constriction on a major artery between a four lane portion to the west and a one-way couple to the east. Construction of the project is planned for 1977. An increase of noise and air pollution is expected to some degree. The relocation of some persons and businesses is anticipated by the project. Several roadside trees will be removed by the improvement. There are three basic alternatives for the proposed action plus a do-nothing alternative.
