The project consists of constructing two 24' lanes (four traffic lanes each 12' wide) from near the present west entrance of Fort Massac State Park to the Federal Aid Interstate Route 24 interchange 2.2 miles east. The purpose of this project is to upgrade U.S. Route 45 in such a manner as to relieve predicted congestion on the existing facility. The road is near Metropolis, Massac County, Illinois. The probable impact on the environment will include acquisition of 30.2 acres of recreation related property but will also increase accessibility to the park from which the land is required. Adverse environmental effects would be the above mentioned loss of park land for highway purposes -- one residence would be displaced outside the park boundaries.
