Theoretical studies on the analysis of near misses and midair collisions under visual meteorological conditions are discussed. The applicability of the rules for collision avoidance for pilots approaching a powered glider or flying in the critical area between collision and overtaking courses, and the effectiveness of horizontal evasive maneuvers in this area are studied using some examples. Restrictions on the visibility of an approaching aircraft due to meteorological optical phenomena, small dimensions, structures in the cockpit, and other tasks of the pilot are discussed for level turning and straight and level flight. The apparent tracks of aircraft in straight flight on the windscreens of aircraft which are performing level turns or straight and level flights are shown, and the limits of visual collision avoidance demonstrated. The results are also applicable to the initial and advanced training of pilots.
