Curved highway and county road approaches to intersections are a common occurrence in Nebraska. Horizontal alignments of intersecting roadways are commonly designed to provide an intersection skew angle of desirably 10 degrees or less. since horizontal curvature is dependent upon design speed, it is import to use the appropriate speed for the condition of a vehicle decelerating to make a stop at an intersection. Although the 1994 AASHTO Green Book provides guidance for high speed horizontal curves and curves at intersections and turning roadways, there is little guidance for design procedures to use when transitioning from full speed to a stopped condition on a curved alignment. The objective of this research is to develop guidelines that would provide horizontal alignments suitable for the speed that vehicles are traveling as they approach a stopped condition at an intersection. The research will involve the collection of field observation data for selected rural two-lane roadways with horizontal curves that intersect state highways. The study will attempt to locate 50 study site locations for field data collection and review of accident data to study the relationship between accidents and speed, volume, horizontal alignment and cross-sectional features.
