The impact of man rating and reliability requirements on the design, manufacture, validation, operation, and serviceability of the propulsion system for Hermes, together with the technology developments relating to the propulsion system were investigated. Propulsion system requirements; a design specification for the propulsion system; a flow scheme for the propulsion system; selection of candidate equipment and potential suppliers; failure mode, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA), reliability and hazards analysis; identification of problem areas and technology developments; and a development plan, schedule, and costs are outlined.
