The growth prospects of long haul civil air transportation in the Pacific basin and the contribution made by the RB211-524 engine in the Boeing 747 are examined. The development of the latest committed version of this engine giving over 60,000lb static thrust is described as well as the design of the proposed 65,000lb static thrust RB211-524L powerplant. The prospects for ultra high bypass ratio cowled turbofans for long haul operation in the next century are reviewed.
